Department of Communication Sciences

This Department was established in 2001. The need for this Department was dictated by the following reasons:

  1. The emergence of new companies, banks and commercial institutions.
  2. The expansion of TV and Radio Services in the different parts of the country.
  3. The issuance of a number of newspapers and magazines and the introduction of latest press arts.
  4. The noticeable shortage of qualified staff in the communication field.
  5. The growing importance of the globalization issues.

Thus the Communication Department was established to provide trained students in mass-media both theoretically and practically. This is achieved through providing students with the knowledge and skills related to communication.

Units Affiliated to the Faculty of Arts

 Arabic for Specific Purposes (A.S.P.)

This Unit was established in 1993 in compliance with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education which decreed that Arabic Language and Islamic studies are compulsory subjects and a pre-requisite for graduation. The ASP is taught in all Faculties of the University, except the Faculty of Arts.

English for Specific Purposes (E.S.P.)

This Unit was established in 1987 to teach ESP in all Faculties except Faculty of Arts. The Unit aims at enabling students to know the terms and terminologies of their specialization. Students are, therefore, exposed to intensive exercises related to their field of specialization.

Objectives of (E.S.P) Unit

  • To train students to use correctly the words, terms and expressions related to their field of specialization.
  • To enable the students to master the grammar and usage of the language to the required level of their faculties.
  • To develop students listening skills through listening sessions of recorded material related to their specialization.
  • To train students to write correct English and pronounce it well.

Islamic Studies Unit

This Unit was established with the following objectives:

  • To convey to students our message that Islamic Religion represents a way of life affecting the behavior of Muslims.
  • To raise the awareness of students through learning the basics of the Islamic Faith so as to gain a clear vision thus guarding themselves against subversive activities and ideologies.
  • To maintain a functional trend in the study courses to suit the particular specialization in each of the faculties.

Postgraduate Studies

In 2000 the faculty started a new program to establish a Department for Postgraduate studies based on the approval of the University Council Meetings numbers 7 and 8 held in 1999. Thus Higher Diploma courses in English language, Arabic language and Translation were launched in 2000.

The graduate study courses offered are quite challenging. These courses include a great amount of reading, studying and research assignments. Thus, these study courses demand a great deal of discipline and effort from the part of those admitted to them.

M.A. Studies

  • In its 10th. Meeting in April 2001, the University Council approved the M.A. program in English Language and Translation. The preparation for launching the relevant courses have started and will soon be implemented.
  • The University Council approved in its 23rd. meeting in July 2008 the M.A. program by research in Arabic language.

      Future Programs;

The Faculty of Arts plans to introduce three new B.Sc. programs in:

  • German Language
  • Japanese Language
  • Educational Psychology

The preliminary documents have already been prepared and the programs are expected to be launched in the near future.
