Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences

Mission & Objectives

As the first of its kind in the country, the Medical Laboratory program started in 1986. The initiative aimed at providing well trained Medical Laboratory technologists with strong scientific background. Those highly qualified medical technologists constituted an asset not only in the provision of medical health services but also in promotion of medical and biomedical research. The program has become a department in the Faculty of Health Sciences since 1995.

The Faculty of Health Sciences was founded with the prospects of establishing other allied medical departments/Schools to include Physiotherapy, Nursing, Dental Technology and Radiology to fulfill Omdurman Ahlia University goals of serving the community and filling gaps in medical health services.

The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences offers five specializations which include:

1- Chemical Pathology.

2- Microbiology.

3- Parasitology and Medical Entomology.

4- Histopathology.

5- Haematology.

Students in the Medical Laboratory Sciences Department spend a preliminary year before they start their specialization courses.

The preliminary year constitutes basic sciences and basic medical sciences courses as pre-requisites. The basic science courses include general chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and statistics.

Basic medical sciences include physiology, biochemistry, anatomy and histology. The specialization and co-requisite courses are offered in second to fourth years of study.

Each of the students specializes in one discipline in their fourth and final year where they receive extensive training in medical laboratory settings inside the university and outside in specified educational hospitals, medical and research centers. On program completion, students are awarded B.Sc. Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Future Prospects

The Faculty of Health Sciences is in the process of introducing Nursing Program to be followed by other Departments namely: Physiotherapy, Dental Technology and Radiobiology by the year 2010. As regards the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, a new specialization in immunology and Molecular Diagnostics is in horizon.

Postgraduate programs are underway. These include a Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science and M.Sc. program by courses and complementary research in Phraseology.

Concerning in-service training of undergraduates, the Faculty has undertaken the task of referring this entity by coupling in-service training with graduation projects. This ensures thorough in-service training on one hand, and can optimize solutions and answers to some health problems that are of common prevalence in the community.
